Cocina de la Barra is one of the most special and authentic dining experiences on Uruguay’s coast, at the edge of the Laguna de Rocha. The restaurant is run by a cooperative of wives and daughters of local fishermen, led by the remarkable Beatriz, who set it up to help to protect the lagoon’s fishing culture and way of life. The food is simple, fresh, and local — crab croquettes, shrimp, ceviche and fish caught directly from the lagoon — and served with views over one of Uruguay’s most beautiful natural landscapes.
