When to go…
Summer: January - Mid-March
A relaxed, post-New Year vibe. Both the land and sea are warm, with long, hot summer days. A great time to loiter in the North Island, or near Nelson for days out on the water. Local school holidays run mid-December to early February, so roads and beaches can be busier.
Autumn: Mid-March - Mid-May
Beautiful weather, often with Indian Summer conditions. Autumn colours appear towards the end of May. Walking tracks and alpine areas remain open before snowfall restricts access (especially on South Island). Water temperatures are cool, but still inviting for those who love to swim. Touring is still enjoyable.
Winter: Mid-May - August
Days are short, with snow on the mountains. Temperatures in the North tend to be more moderate, while Queenstown and much of the South experience nightly frosts. Combination of rain, cloud, and chilly blue-sky days. Bad weather tends to pass through quickly. Fewer crowds, so fantastic sightseeing.
Spring: September - December
Fast-moving showers and wind, with plenty of sunshine throughout. The warmer weather comes towards the end of the year. Lambing on farms. Snow often remains on the mountains until late November / early December, making for dramatic scenery.
